Traversing New Terrain

The paintings I created for this exhibition is an attempt to find new visual ground to cover and explore in terms of making abstract imagery. With each new body of work, I try to avoid overt duplication from the past and find a way forward that looks and feels recognizable but with a fresh, progressive twist adding to the body of my existing abstract vocabulary.

The title of the exhibition, “Traversing New Terrain”, is appropriate in the sense that I’m trying to make new work at the same time as experiencing the new reality that we have all been living through the last couple of years during the global pandemic. Trying to navigate through this time of uncertainty and confusion, with many lives lost, relentless misinformation, lies, political division and fear mongering has been challenging to  say the least but we carry on.

These paintings were made over the last couple of years so the COVID situation had an impact on my work in subtle ways.

“Black Trellis #1”

When making the “Black Trellis” paintings, they started out with lots of bright colors and unassuming lines but gradually grew darker with the black organic “vines” taking over and multiplying its form in a dominant way almost like the spreading of a virus.

“New Domain #3”

The “New Domain” paintings reflect a changing landscape and topography that are vaguely familiar but not quite identifiable, questioning the sense of place.

“The Spirits Tangle”

“The Spirits Tangle” may represent the different factions of our society and how our belief systems often clash and conflict with one another.

We are living in an extraordinary time but I know there is no place I would rather be.

I am optimistic about the future and the new terrain we will travel together.

Living, loving and learning!
