The paintings selected for my website represent new work as well as other pieces that I've made over the last 12 years. These abstract paintings reflect the various themes and concepts explored during my career as an artist.
I've always subscribed to the theory of "paint for paint's sake" by celebrating the physical qualities of the medium. Several years ago, I began using encaustic paint which opened up for me a whole new way of thinking about the act of making pictures. The working process involved with encaustic is a labor intensive endeavor but one that can render exciting results. The paint is heated into a liquid state, applied to the surface and then fused with a heat source for proper bonding. The paint can be mixed and applied in a very transparent or opaque manner resulting in a glass-like smoothness or a rough, heavily textured surface. As well, encaustic may also be combined with oil paint and collage materials. There are so many different possibilities with this medium that each new painting is a fascinating experience of discovery.
My goal is to create stunning pieces of art that will engage the viewer and foster a dialogue that is invigorating, educational and rewarding.
